How to deal with angry patient!?!?!
Just had a behavioural sciences lesson which is about the way of dealing angry patients.
We were given 4 scenario which there will be stimulated patient showing their anger and bombarded us with all sort of emotion…
We started with a milder dose, the SP was a little bit angry but still can be consider cooperative. So there were not much problem for us to cope and handle the situation. 3 of us tried on to interviewed the SP and we got very useful feedback from our facilitator– Mr Galy.
Then as we were more "experienced", we get another SP who appeared to be angrier than the previous 1. 3 of us tried to interviewed as well this time seem to be more challenging and some of us got stuck and cant continue the conversation.
After finished with the 2 SP , Mr Galy introduced us to the 3rd SP. And now we had Mustaq as de "doctor"..The fun part begun….The SP is really a well trained 1.. He really can act damn well. He was so angry and frustrated and keep scolding Mustaq for the hurdle he had gone thorugh before actually seeing the doctor. He was cursing the nurses who ran him to polyclinic instead of A&E as he was having an asthmatic attack. Mustaq was totally unable to calm down the patient. The SP keep saying he is short of breath and refuse to answer any question Mustaq asked. Damn funny la when the SP keep panting and Mustaq keep asking questions.Haha… This is how the patient react : I had told u i am SOB, y u keep asking my question!!! Cant u just put me in nebulliser den i can answer u 101 question after this.." Imagine ur patient telling u this …wah really dunno how to react!! pengsan wei..
The atmosphere was so intense and every 1 was waiting for Mustaq response…And finally.. Mustaq said:" I really cant proceed any more" Wahaha every 1 burst and laugh so hard even Mr Galy did so too. Then the SP started to explained wat knid of response he wanted from us… Luckily Mr Galy was not vy upset with our performance and he said we still "young" so is ok we feel panic when handle this kind of situation…..
Wah really learn a lot during this session. It really need a lot of skill and practice in order to deal with such difficult patients…Cant imagine if 1 day in real life when i really become a doctor and got stuck in this kind of situation. Communication skill really essential for us as we are dealing with individual who are all different and may react differently to certain scenario. Hmm better start to buck up in this thing before i become a true doctor.. I certainy wouln’t want to surrender in front of my patient in the future and say " look u are too difficult to handle, could u pls come urself down before i start to examine u!!" This obviously not going to work in real life….
Still lot more things to learn and lot more skills to acquire….Medical profession really is something chanllenging and interesting..Starting to like this thing more and more ( beside the never endless exam) …Tomolo going Kuala Kurbu Baru Hospital for rotation lo…Hopefully can get thro this thingy without landed in a mess ….

H - handling (evaluate pt’s)
E - empathy (express)
